Influenza
Information
Seasonal Influenza is a respiratory illness that can be transmitted
from person to person. Most people have some immunity (resistance)
to seasonal flu strains and a vaccine (flu shot) is available.

Pandemic Influenza is a
virulent (extremely powerful) human flu that can quickly spread
around the world and affects a large number of people. Because
there is little natural immunity (resistance), the disease can
spread easily from person to person. Currently, there is no
pandemic flu.
Avian Influenza is caused by
influenza viruses that occur naturally among wild birds. When
these viruses mix with influenza
viruses that affect humans, new strains of flu result. The H5N1
(commonly called bird flu) is deadly to
domestic fowl, like chickens and turkeys. Avian influenza rarely
infects humans.
